Saatuani tiukan bauhausilaisen koulutuksen tuntuu vapauttavalta oivaltaa muodon symbolinen merkitys, muodon merkitys viestinä. Samalla tuntuu siltä, että nyt kaikki on mahdollista, että olemme vapaita luomaan uutta, ylittämään rajat ja astumaan kielletylle alueelle – muotoilija Rita Taskinen Muoto-lehdessä vuonna 1983.

Kevään suurnäyttely on jatkoa Designmuseon sarjalle muotoilun tyyleistä 1900-luvulla. Näyttely esittelee laajasti postmodernismin laveaa viitekehystä vuosien 1980–1995 suomalaisesta näkökulmasta arkkitehtuurissa, muotoilussa, populaarikulttuurissa sekä taiteessa. Esillä on myös kansainvälisiä vaikutteita ja toimijoita.

Postmoderni – tyyli tai ajattelutapa – haastaa modernismille ominaisen uskon lineaariseen kehitykseen ja parempaan tulevaisuuteen. Postmodernismissa korostuu vapaus – muotoa ei tarvitse perustella. Mennyt ja nykyinen, parodia ja käsitteellisyys kohtaavat. Tulkinnalle jätetään tilaa, ja ilmaisutapoja halutaan uudistaa. Näyttelyn teemat ovat ajankohtaisia. Maailmanpolitiikka huokuu jälleen kylmän sodan tunnelmaa, suomettuminen nostetaan keskusteluun. Sosiaalinen media ja olemisen monet tasot pirstovat arvomaailmaa ja elämää. Rajojen rikkomisen kautta syntyy dialogi.

Näyttelyssä nähdään muun muassa seuraavien tekijöiden tuotantoa: Stefan Lindfors, Leena Luostarinen, Rita Taskinen, Vesa Varrela, Kimmo Sarje, Martin Relander, Aldo Rossi, Peter Shier, Natalie du Pasquer ja Philippe Starck.

Design Museum’s major exhibition of the spring season continues its series on 20th-century styles in design. It presents an extensive overview of the broad frame of reference of postmodernism from the Finnish perspective of the years 1980 – 1995 in architecture, design, popular culture and the arts. International influences and actors are also presented

Postmodernism – as a style or way of thinking – challenges the belief in linear progress and a better future that was characteristic of modernism. It emphasizes freedom – there does not have to be any argument for form. Postmodernism provides an encounter of past and present, parody and conceptualism, with room for interpretation and a desire to renew forms of expression. The themes of the exhibition are topical. There is once again a Cold War atmosphere in international politics, and Finlandization has been taken up in discussion. Social media and the various levels of being lead to the fragmentation of values and life. Dialogue is created through the breaking of boundaries.

The exhibition will feature work by, among others, the following artists and designers: Stefan Lindfors, Leena Luostarinen, Rita Taskinen, Vesa Varrela, Kimmo Sarje, Martin Relander, Aldo Rossi, Peter Shier, Natalie du Pasquer and Philippe Starck.
