Plus Or Minus, Suit Your Self

This interactive performance installation made by takis showcases artistic research-driven male suits. Through the fusion of performance, fashion and media, - suit + offers an interactive environment, in which male visitors are given the opportunity to explore the performative power of the male suit.
The two collective series of suits (minus and plus) experiment with form, colour and materiality, challenge social attitudes towards male fashion and confront conventional concepts over contemporary male decoration and the notion of masculinity. The starting point for these suits was the urge to explore the lack of ornamentation on the male suit in the last two centuries, aiming at reclaiming decoration as an expressive means.
Through the manipulation of a single-breasted suit, via subtraction (-) and addition (+), two distinct yet conceptually interrelated collective series emerge: the minus series, based on the subtraction of parts of the suit; and the plus series, based on the addition of design elements to the suit. The male visitors of the installation have the option to choose their preferable design from the plus series (available in a wide range of sizes) and explore the performative power of the suit by decorating it further declaring their perception of extravagance.
- suit + is a creative interactive social experiment offering male members of the audience the unique opportunity to play with their image constructing their own model of a twenty-first century ‘ male peacock’.
Conceived and designed by the performance designer takis. - suit + is presented at the Design Museum Helsinki in collaboration with the Costume in Focus Research Group, Aalto University School of Arts, Design & Architecture.
takis is a London based performance designer. His work has been seen internationally and at many of the UK’s leading theatres, working on different platforms and genres of performances.
