Coach Zoran and his African Tigers
Sam Benstead, England, 2013, 75'
South Sudan is the world’s newest country, gaining its independence in 2011 after 50 years of civil war. Contrary to common depictions of Sudan, this documentary is not about violence and horror, but about football and the birth of a nation. Director Benstead follows the creation of the South Sudanese national football team for around a year. Sport is an important part of creating a nationalist spirit and with the help of Zoran Djordjevic, a veteran football coach, this is expected to be an easy task. Like in every good story, the mission turns out to be more difficult than originally anticipated. Djordjevic has a special style of running his team, a style filled with emotions and impropriate behaviour. His character is so unbelievable yet real that it would make any scriptwriter jealous. Together with the farcical evolution of the forming of the national team we also get to meet the players and hear about their everyday life.
