Midsummer in Helsinki 🔥
There is no calmer or more beautiful time in Helsinki than Midsummer. The city is in full bloom, lush and green, while many residents have escaped to the countryside or sought refuge in nature-filled oases around the city. 🌺
Traditionally, Finns leave the city behind and head to summer cottages, lakeshores, and rural retreats. Those fortunate enough to stay in Helsinki can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city’s unusually quiet streets. Despite the peaceful surroundings, there is still plenty happening, with a wide range of events and activities throughout the Midsummer weekend.
In Helsinki’s beautiful archipelago, the midsummer celebrations continue by the sea. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere on islands such as the peaceful islet of Katajanokanluoto and Pihlajasaari, surrounded by stunning coastal scenery.
There are also Midsummer dances to suit many tastes. In the archipelago, celebrations take place on Vallisaari as well as on Pihlajasaari.
Families can celebrate Midsummer with traditional bonfires at the famous Seurasaari Midsummer Bonfires. At the Midsummer festivities in Kivinokka, visitors can enjoy the magical atmosphere of the Midsummer evening and night surrounded by nature.
Fresh vegetables, berries, flowers, meat, and fish for the midsummer feast can be purchased at the Midsummer market and market hall in Hakaniemi Market Square. While there, visitors can also enjoy a traditional bowl of Midsummer rice porridge at the Kahvisiskot market tent.

Even in the city, it is possible to welcome this magical midsummer celebration by following some of Finland’s traditional Midsummer customs and folk rituals.
One well-known tradition is to gather seven different kinds of flowers from seven different meadows. According to folklore, if the flowers are placed under your pillow for the night, you will dream of your future spouse. Another Midsummer Eve tradition involved rolling naked in rye fields, hoping to attract love, fertility, and good fortune in finding a partner. 🌿✨
