Short Lecture Course: History of Finnish Architecture

This short lecture course is an introductory package of the history of Finnish architecture, from the vernacular wooden houses to the hi-tec architecture of the 1990s, what was built, when and why? The aim is to become more aware of the architecture you encounter in, for instance, Helsinki, and to understand how building and architecture are interconnected with the general development of Finnish culture and society.
The course leader is Netta Böök (architect M.Sc.), and the lectures will be held at the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Kasarmikatu 24, Helsinki (www.mfa.fi). The course is organised by the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in collaboration with the Museum of Finnish Architecture.
ENTRANCE
The lectures are open for all museum visitors. The students of Aalto University and Helsinki University enter free when they show a valid student card at the ticket counter; others willing to attend the lectures have to pay the museum entrance fee 8/4/0€ . The excursions are free, except for entrance fees.

Thursday 7th of April 4:15-6:00 p.m. The Finnish wooden town. Finnish 19th century architecture. Helsinki from the 17th to 20th century
Monday 11th of April 14:00-16:00 p.m. Walking tour in the historical centre of Helsinki. Meeting point Alexander Statue, Senate Square
Tuesday 12th of April 4:15-6:00 p.m. Finnish architecture from around 1900 to the 1940´s. National Romanticism, the Classicism of the 1920´s, Finnish Functionalism
Thursday 14th of April 4:15-6:00 p.m. Finnish architecture after World War II. The Golden Age of the 1950's, the building boom of the 1960's, and the later tendencies
Friday 15th of April, 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Alvar Aalto excursion in Helsinki. Meeting point House of Alvar Aalto at Riihitie 20. Note: Entrance fees must be covered by the participant (max 20 € / person).
